Lightlab artist Frederick Worrell Awarded £12,500 ACE National Lottery Project Grant

Artist and designer Frederick Worrell has been awarded £12,500 through Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants for his new research and development project, Scaling Reflection: Research and Development of Reflective Light Systems.

The project builds on Worrell’s recent participation in Lightlab and will support the continued development of his immersive light-based artistic practice, exploring reflection, projection, perception, and large-scale visual environments.

Working across installation, sculpture, reflective materials, and light systems, Worrell’s practice investigates the relationship between audience, space, movement, and visual distortion. The funding will enable a sustained period of experimentation, technical development, prototyping, and artistic research as he expands the scale and ambition of the work.

Worrell, a UK-based Māori artist, has become increasingly recognised for creating visually striking environments that transform through light, reflection, and viewer interaction.

Speaking about the award, Worrell said:
“To receive this support from Arts Council England feels incredibly encouraging. A large part of being an artist involves following ideas instinctively, experimenting constantly, and developing work without always knowing where it will lead. This funding creates the opportunity to properly explore and develop ideas that have been growing over the past year and push the work much further.”

The project marks an important next step in the evolution of Worrell’s light-based practice and opens the door to future exhibitions, collaborations, and public engagement opportunities.
