Artist Commission Put Big Light On festival

Job Summary

Put Big Light On Festival is seeking proposals from artists to design, create and install a new light artwork for Bolton’s annual light art festival which will take place Thursday 20 – Sun 23 November 2025.

Job Description

We are open to expressions of interest from artists of any art form, or cross art form practice, including visual art, music, theatre, dance, digital or cross art forms but must include light as a central component of the work. The final artwork will form part of light art trail in Bolton town centre featuring several installations including Dan Acher’s Borealis in Victoria Square and Luke Jerram’s Mars in Bolton Central Library.

The final artwork will be displayed indoors inside The Octagon Theatre’s Studio space. The artwork will belong to the artist after the festival.

As part of the festival, The Octagon Theatre will be programming storytelling and other performance work in the Studio space alongside the commissioned artwork. This will include work for and by people with special educational needs and disabilities. Submissions should take this into account and explore opportunities to heighten the impact of this work.

The total budget for this piece of work is £12,500 inclusive of all costs and VAT.
